Teaching in December is hard! We let our guard down and have some fun with our students, make memories, and let some important things go for a week or two. Coming back in January can be a challenge, but it’s a great time to re-establish rules and routines! You can also use this time to encourage students with growth mindset activities and establish do some goal setting too! I’m sharing some free videos and activities with you today, if you know of any others please let me know!
Where to Start
When you return to school after Christmas/Winter break, you can begin discussions about growth mindset and goal setting. Get students excited about the end of the year and tell them explicitly what goals they will need to achieve. If you haven’t introduced your students to the growth mindset, they will benefit greatly from learning how mistakes help them learn and how their brains are still growing, like our other muscles-they grow stronger by getting used. No one expects our students to be perfect, but hard work will help them meet attainable goals. This series from Class Dojo is a great way to start!
Goal Setting Flipbook
Your students will establish their strengths, learn about what they need to work on, set goals, and make plans on how to meet the goals.
You can meet with them, some in small groups, others individually, and help them establish their goals and make their plans. The goal setting flipbook is available in digital format or printable in one download.
Keep the Momentum Going
Students will love tracking their own progress towards the goals set in the New Years activities flipbook. If you want to extend goal setting and tracking beyond January, you’ll want to try these growth mindset activities. These digital notebooks include video links and a more in-depth introduction to growth mindset, plus a monthly journal to set goals and keep track of progress each and every month.
